Joan “Joni” Marie Plant, 77, of Dakota City, NE, passed away Monday, January, 4, 2021 at Pioneer Valley Living and Rehab, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to service time. Due to the ongoing pandemic, masks and social distancing is required. Online condolences can be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Joan was born on February 9, 1943 to John and Carmelita (Schulte) Riesberg in Carroll, Iowa. She attended St. Augustine Catholic School in Halbur and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll in 1961. Joan married Jim Spearman on February 8, 1964 and together they raised three children; Kathy (Spearman) Flynn, Rod Spearman, and Russ Spearman. Joan married Bob Lutt on December 31, 1999. Joan and Bob enjoyed 5 years of marriage until Bob’s passing in 2005. Joan married Gary Plant on February 11, 2008. Joan and Gary were married until her death living most of their time together in Dakota City, Nebraska.
Joan was a woman of strong faith. She worked in an insurance office and various physician clinics while raising her children. She loved going to visit her sisters during fair time and traveling with Gary in the camper. Joan’s greatest love was her family.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Plant of Dakota City; children Rod (Janet) Spearman of Sioux Falls, SD, Russ Spearman of Sioux City; grandchildren Ryan Sharp, Jordan (Chelsea) Flynn of Glenwood, IA, Morgan Flynn of Vermillion, SD, Brody Spearman of Sioux City; great-grandchildren Caden Phillips and Calum Flynn; step-children Jean McLaury of Elk Point, SD, Kathy Plant, Tracy Plant; sisters Lorraine Schieffer and Eileen Halbur; and numerous lifelong friends and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harold Riesberg, sisters Marian Goodnight and Lois Van Cleave, and daughter Kathy (Spearman) Flynn.
