Joe R. Hendrix, 78, formerly of both Dakota and Woodbury counties, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022 at the Pawnee Valley Hospital in Larned, KS. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at the funeral home. Online condolences may be directed to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Joe was born on August 17, 1943 in Belvidere, TN, to C. B. Hendrix and Doris (Greer) Hendrix, at the home of his grandparents. He spent most of his childhood there, helping around the farm. In 1959, the family moved to Snead, AL, where he finished high school and graduated from Susan Moore High School in 1961.
In August of 1961 he moved to Sioux City, and was working at Bishops Cafeteria downtown. On June 10, 1962, he married Carol Obermeyer in South Sioux City. In 1969, he was part owner and operator of the Uptown Bakery in South Sioux City.
In 1977 he sold his share of the business and started working for Sunkist Bakery in Sioux City. He finished his working career working for Hy-Vee Bakeries in Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri.
In 2017, he and Carol moved to Lenard, KS, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of Larned, KS; son, Jerry of Sioux City; daughters: Toni of Larned, KS; Teri of Buckner, MO; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents; 2 brothers; a sister; and 2 sons.
Joe was a transplant from Alabama, but was every bit a fan of his home state as he was a Nebraska Cornhusker.
