John Pershing Cartee, 99, of Savannah, Georgia, and husband of Dora Mae Waters Cartee, died Tuesday December 4th, 2018 with family present in Sioux City, Iowa. Celebration of John’s life will be Saturday, December 8th, 2018 at 10:00 am at Bethel Baptist Church, 4212 Gordon Drive. His son-in-law, Pastor Mark McGlohon officiating.
John was born on May 8th, 1919 in Metter, Georgia to Charlie Jackson Cartee and Mary Lanier. His parents farmed and raised their 10 children: Wallace, Blonnie, Elizabeth, Walter, Charlie, George, John, Josh, Mary and Betty. John graduated from Pulaski High School where he played basketball on the All State Championship Team in 1938. He received a scholarship to college and gave it up after his father died to run the farm for his mother and help raise his 3 younger siblings. In 1952, he married his sweetheart Dora and moved to Savannah, Georgia where he worked for International Paper for 30 years and retired in 1982.
John would make you lick your lips after he made you a fabulous meal. He loved to fish and would get a great thrill even if it was small. He was one of the most loving, kind, hardworking, self-sacrificing, soft spoken southern gentlemen to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was a witty joker and made those around him laugh. He was most importantly a mon of God who loved to give and serve. He’s not gone he has just changed addresses.
John is survived by Dora his loving wife of 66 years. A daughter Jane (Mark) McGlohon of Sioux City, IA. A son David Cartee of Guyton, Georgia. His grandchildren Matthew McGlohon, Michaela McGlohon of Sioux City, Iowa and Savannah (Justin) Genaille of Port Royal, South Carolina. Great grandsons Collin, Daniel, and Elijah. John is preceded in death by his parents, 8 siblings, 4 children and his grandson, Christopher Cartee.
