John "Franklin" Sherwood

John F. Sherwood, 97, of Ponca, NE went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at a Sioux City, IA hospital.Services will be held at the Evangelical Free Church in Ponca on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 9:30 A.M. with Pastor Dennis Ritchey officiating. Visitation with the family present will begin at 9:00 A.M. at the church, with a brunch following the service. Military rites will be conducted by the Ponca American Legion Post 117. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca. Online condolences may be sent at www.mohrfuneralhome.com.John "Franklin" was born March 16, 1913 at Union, NE, the son of Frank Warren and Viola Clarista (Hughson) Sherwood. He grew up on the farm near Walthill, Nebraska.Franklin proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Force (1942-1945) working as an Airplane Engine Mechanic during WWII, stationed in Italy and Africa. He returned from the war and farmed for many years near Ponca, Neb. until retiring and moving into the city of Ponca. He married Clare B. Mittan on December 28, 1981 and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church of Ponca and a member of the Ponca American Legion Post 117 Veterans of Foreign Wars.Survivors include his wife, Clare Sherwood of Ponca, Neb.; two brothers, Amos Sherwood of San Marcos, Calif., and Warren and his wife, Phyllis Sherwood of Omaha, Neb; one sister, Betty and her husband, Ed Pallas of Delta, Colo.; three children; several grand-children and great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Harley Davis, Irene and Lamars Clark, Isabel Peters, and LaVon and Kenneth Taylor; and one sister-in-law, Nellie Sherwood.
