John Fleming Gatewood

February 17, 1945 — August 20, 2019

  John Fleming Gatewood, 74, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at MercyOne Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 23, 2019 at Calvary Cemetery. Fr. Anthony Nwudah will officiate. Online condolences can be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

  John was born February 17, 1945 to Leonard Popevis and Gloria Fleming. He spent his early childhood in Sioux City until he moved to Californiain 1952. John attended college at California State University in Fullerton.  In 1980, John returned to Sioux City. He worked as a phlebotomist at Marian Health Center (currently MercyOne) for many years. John had 2 children, a daughter born in 1982 and a son in 1984.

  John enjoyed movies, cars, and guitars. He was a devoted member of Cathedral of the Epiphany, where he attended daily mass. John also donated to Trinity Heights and was present for the dedication of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Queen of Peace statue in 1993.

  Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Sarah Marie (Peter) Levesque of Littleton, CO; son John Michael (Rebecca) Gatewood of Lincoln City, OR; sister Andrea (Glen) Shephard of Sioux City; grandchildren Dominic, Catherine, Samuel, William, and another grandson on the way.

   John was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Popevis in 1994, and his mother, Gloria Gatewood in 2009.
