John Lee Harper

John Lee Harper, 65, of Sioux City passed away on February 18, 2022 at a local hospital. A Celebration of Life is pending for late April 2022. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

 

John was born on February 15, 1957 in Sioux City to Duncan and Jeanene (Momsen) Harper. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. He graduated from North High School in 1975, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Western Iowa Tech in 1979. His first job was as a custom stereo installer at Pflanz Electronics. He also worked at Gateway Computer Corporation for 15 years until the business closed. While there, John built and ran the first thermal testing laboratory for small computers.

 

John was also active in family investment properties for most of his adult life. He was a boating and custom van enthusiast, and could often be seen on the Missouri river or attending van shows in the Siouxland area.

 

John was a brittle diabetic from birth, and became the 13th patient nationally to receive a double kidney and pancreas transplant. Over his lifetime, he had nine organ transplants including his last kidney from a live donor in 2011.

 

Survivors include his step-mother, Deb Hansen of Sioux City; brother Scott Harper, his wife Reba Harper, and their daughter Greer Harper, all of Mentor, Ohio; niece, Alexis Harper and her spouse Jason Cooke of Augusta, GA; niece Jacqueline Parker and her daughter Madison Parker, of Virginia Beach, VA; niece Janine Harper, her spouse Christopher Jones, and their children Ella and Kyren Harper, all of San Antonio, TX; coustin Betsy Momsen and her spouse Roy Gaskell, of Livingston, TX; and his live kidney donor and lifelong friend, Terri Turner of Kansas City, MO.
