John F. Okonoski

February 2, 1923 — January 27, 2021

John F. Okonoski, 97, of Sioux City, passed away January 27, 2021 at a local nursing home.  Private family graveside services will be held at Calvary Cemetery.  Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is handling the arrangements.  Online condolences may be made to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Mr. Okonoski was born February 2, 1923, in Sioux City and was a lifetime Sioux City resident.  John Felix Okonoski, son of Kashmer “John” Okonosky and Katie “Katherine” Kacnovilc.

On June 17, 1946, he married Pearl Walker at St. Boniface Catholic Church.  He worked for J.D.D. Lubricants, Novelty Machine and was a truck driver; retiring from Crouse Cartage Trucking in 1985.

He was a member of American Foreign Legion Post #64, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and retired Teamsters.  He was in the army; serving overseas from June 7, 1943 to November 11, 1945 in World War II.  Serving in Normandy, Northern France, Ardenines, Rhineland, and Central Europe.  He received four overseas service bars, European, African and Middle Eastern theater ribbons with one Silver Battle Star, good conduct medal, World War II Victory medal.

Survivors include one daughter Barbara Ann and her husband, Leif P. Solheim, of Vermillion, SD, one son, John David and his wife Barbara Jean (Luhr) Okonoski of Schererville, IN; two granddaughters, Jill and her husband, Matt Barker, and Jenna and her husband, David Carnahan; and three great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl; his mother and father; sister Helen; two half-brothers, Mike and Joe Nanek and two half-sisters, Ann Laurans and Marie Lenkovich.
