Johnnie D. Heydon, of rural Ponca, passed away on Monday, Februray 18, 2008 at a Sioux City, Iowa hospital.Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca, Nebraska. Pastor Sara Simmons from the United Methodist Church in Ponca officiated. Burial was in the Ponca City Cemetery in Ponca. John was born on January 07, 1924 in Ponca, Nebraska, the son of Charles F. and Rachel E.(Curry) Heydon. John grew up in Ponca and graduated from Ponca High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 12, 1943 during World War II. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was one of only a few from his unit that returned from "The Battle of the Bulge". He was honorable discharge from the U.S. Army on December 01, 1945. John worked in the masonry construction business. John lived in rural Ponca since 1967. He raised hogs, enjoyed gardening and liked all kinds of animals.Survivors include five sons; Gregory Heydon, Gerald Heydon, Thomas Heydon, Richard Heydon, David Heydon, two daughters; Pamela (Heydon) Ragan, and Marcella Heydon, two granddaughters, one grandson, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Ralph in 1983 and Donovan in 2006.
