Katherine J. "Kay" Shelly

Katherine “Kay” J. Shelly, 88 of South Sioux City, passed away Monday, December 9, 2024. A memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home. 

Katherine was born the daughter of William Morgan and Ora (Beermann) Morgan on June 27, 1936 and lived on a farm homesteaded by her great-grandfather. She attended Brushy Bend School, South Sioux City High School, Midland College and Immanuel School of Nursing. Kay married William E. Shelly on January 28, 1961 and had two children, William “Bill” Morgan Shelly and Elizabeth “Beth” Ann Shelly.

Nursing was her life. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City for the majority of her career. She was a gifted caregiver who always went above and beyond for her patients. 

In her retirement, Kay enjoyed feeding the birds in the backyard and tending to her flowers. She was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church in Dakota City.

Kay is survived by her children, Bill (Lori) Shelly and Beth Anderson; grandchildren, Morgan (Paige) Shelly, Alan (Anita) Anderson, and Austin (Candi) Anderson; great-grandchildren, Olive Rose and Poppy Jo Shelly and Sienna, Cohen, Hannah, and Aero Anderson; and granddaughter-in-law, Gena Shelly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; grandson, Taylor Shelly; sisters, Miriam Schneider and Maurine Johnson; son-in-law, Robert "Andy" W. Anderson.
