LaVerne Anne Armour, 74, passed away at the Avoca Specialty Clinic in Avoca, IA on August 22, 2019. She moved to the facility early this year for treatment of a variety of illnesses, but ultimately succumbed during her sleep. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel (3220 Stone Park Blvd., Sioux City, IA 51104) before she is laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery (N. Cassleman St.) in Sioux City, Iowa.
LaVerne was born February 17, 1944 in Sioux City, the eldest of six children and raised in Sioux City by her parents, Chester and LaVerne Niegowski. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City. In 1963 she married Bruce Simmons in Sioux City, and they had two sons. They divorced in 1975. She married a second time, to David Armour in California. The two had a daughter, but this also ended in divorce. She made her home in many areas, including North Carolina, California, and Alabama before returning to Iowa in 2012, when she moved to Avoca.
LaVerne was a long time Bechtel and Volt Contractor who last worked for Project/Nuclear Contruction in the configuration control group and retired in 2009. She loved flower gardens and the beaches of California. In her spare time, she would quilt beautiful comforters and various wall hangings depicting the flowers she loved.
She is survived by her four children: Susan Peterson, Kenneth (Kumja) Simmons, Mark (Sheri) Simmons and Elizabeth Rose; seven grandchildren: Sara, Rory, Mena, Daniel, Jeremy, Jeff and David; five great-grandchildren: Ethan, Isabella, Aiden, Solomon and Alaina; four siblings: Ebba Stedellie, Larry Niegowski, Michael Niegowski and Debbie Henkels.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Patricia Lown.
We will all mourn the loss of LaVerne, but will take some conciliation in the fact that she is no longer suffering.
