Lyle Oscar Wendte, 86, of Newcastle, Nebraska passed away at his residence on Friday, September 3, 2010, following a lengthy battle with cancer.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Salem Lutheran Church in Ponca, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. Neal Anthony officiating. Burial will be in Silver Ridge Cemetery in rural Ponca with military rites conducted by the Newcastle Laurence Lofgren American Legion Post #62. Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, with the family present at 6:00 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca, Nebraska. Online condolences may be sent at www.mohrfuneralhome.com.Lyle was born May 18, 1924 on a farm south of Newcastle, the son of Oscar and Effie (Flom) Wendte. He went to Powder Creek Country School and graduated from Newcastle High School. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from 1945 to 1946 as a clerk and typist at Headquarters 315th General Hospital office in the Philippine Islands. On March 7, 1947 he married Mildred Olander at Salem Lutheran Church in Ponca. The couple farmed before purchasing the bar in Newcastle in 1949.Lyle was a lifetime member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ponca, the Newcastle Laurence Lofgren American Legion Post #62 and the Martinsburg Vernon Gasser VFW Post 5435. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports, especially baseball.He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Newcastle, NE; sons, David (Julee) Wendte of Ponca, NE and Kevin Wendte of Newcastle, NE; daughters, Sheryn Asher of Austin, TX, Peggy (Dave) Anderson of Ponca, NE, Pam (Kevin) Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD and Cindy (Gregg) Doeden of Phoenix, AZ; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bob (Sue) Wendte of Newcastle, NE, Jim (Janice) Wendte of Yankton, SD; sisters, Faye Marron of Newcastle, NE, Shirley Livingston of South Sioux City, NE and Connie (Roger) Voss of Lincoln, NE; and many nieces and nephews.Lyle was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Lyle Wendte; sister, Junealee Voss, brothers-in-law, Leonard Marron, Robert Livingston and Chris Voss.
