Maida was born on April 2, 1933 to Melvin and Ruth (Jenkins) Mignery at home on her family’s ranch in Bartlett, Nebraska. She was raised on the family ranch in Bartlett, and attended Wheeler County School, where she graduated in 1950. She was very limber and in high school performed acrobatics for county fairs. She went on to attend Wayne State College, where she graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor Degree in Business. Following her graduation from Wayne State, Maida taught for one year at Irvington Schools in Irvington, Nebraska.
On September 5, 1970 she married K. Wayne Johnson in Sioux City. Wayne passed away in April of 1990.
Maida spent years working as a bookkeeper and auditor for different companies, including Jefferson Co. Bank in Lakewood, CO, and Golden State Bank in Golden, CO. She moved to Sioux City following her marriage to Wayne in 1970.
She was an active member of Ladies of the Nile, and was also a pianist and organist for many years at both the Hinton United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Sioux City, where she played for the children’s choirs and for weddings, often with her sister. She and her husband Wayne travelled extensively with the Abu-Bekr Shriners. Maida also avidly enjoyed golfing. She was a talented seamstress: she made many quilts over the years, and also spent time crocheting, doing needlepoint, and making dollhouses.
Maida is survived by her children: James M. Kemper (Mary) of Lakewood, CO; Kenneth W. Johnson, Jr. (Judy) of Austin, TX; Mark D. Johnson (Barbara) of Sioux City; and Kirk T. Johnson (Angele) of Van Alstyne, TX; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; sister, Marta Hughes of Sioux City; and brother, Herb Mignery (Sherry) of Loveland, CO.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; and her parents, Melvin and Ruth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Maida’s name may be directed to the Abu-Bekr Shriners Transportation Fund or to the Military Warriors Support Foundation.
