Marian F. Slavens

July 31, 1933 — June 19, 2022

   Marian F. Slavens, 88, of Dakota City, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at her residence following a short illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 8, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church of South Sioux City. Pastor Beth Hamilton will officiate.    Marian was born on July 31, 1933 in Gilbert, Iowa, to Henry and Kate (Koehler) Martin. She graduated from high school in Ames, Iowa, and continued on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State University.

   On June 4, 1955, she married J Phillip Slavens in Ames. He passed away on November 16, 2013 in Dakota City.

   Marian was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of South Sioux City. She enjoyed singing with numerous groups throughout her life, was a proud member of Harmony Four, and was an accomplished artist and seamstress.

   Left to cherish her memory include her children: Kristi Quinn (Bill) of Dakota City; John Slavens (Mari) of Zionsville, IN; Karen Hollister (Terry) of Merritt Island, FL; J Paul Slavens of Denton, TX; and Elizabeth “Beth” Funkey (Mark) of Hastings, NE; special daughter, Joan Phillips; grandchildren: Ryan (Clara) and their son Jacob; Kate (Chris) and their children Quinn (fiancé, Grace), Elizabeth “Lily” and Jude Phillip; Nathan (Jennifer) and their children Hazel and Winston; Rachel (Dillon) and their children Rylan J, Hadley, and Casen; Henry; Liz; Madison (Michael); August “Gus”; Max (Katie) and their daughter Penelope “Penny”; Emily (fiancé, Joey); and John (Remi); and a sister, Elizabeth Watson of Chapel Hill, NC.

   She was preceded in death by her husband, J Phillip Slavens; a granddaughter, Sarah Slavens; a great-grandson, Ulysses Quinn; and two brothers: Carl Martin and Arthur Martin.

   Memorial donations in Marian’s name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or First Presbyterian Church of South Sioux City.
