Marie Cownie of Sioux City passed away Friday, March 13, 2020.
Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 21, 2020 at St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City with Father Peter Cox officiating. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery inside Graceland Park Cemetery.
Marie was born January 27, 1936 in Sioux City to John and Frances Hanna and was one of 6 children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Orthodox Church and helped with the dinners for many years. She graduated from East High School in 1954 and participated in organizing many class reunions.
Marie had various jobs over the years. She was an excellent seamstress creating amazing custom wedding dresses, accessories and gowns as well as owned/operated a drapery workroom (Custom Hangups) and worked as a designer and decorator for many years. She had a creative side with a passion for art and crafted many exquisite Santas among other things. She also took great pleasure in her plants and enjoyed gardening.
Her survivors include her children: William (Tanya) Cownie of Lee Summit, MO, Daniel (Maureen) Cownie of Waukee, IA; Kevin (Jenny) Cownie of Lincoln, NE; and a daughter, Andrea “Andi” (Mark) Mehner of Omaha, NE; 9 grandchildren;12 great grandchildren; a sister Kathy (Mel) Wieseler; and two brothers: Don (Gina) Hanna and Ron (Marge) Hanna.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Shirley (Henry) Gill, and a brother John Hanna.
Memorials may be given to St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Marie’s Memory.
