Marie A. Keefer, 93, of South Sioux City passed away on Monday, April 6, 2015 at a South Sioux City Care facility.Services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 10, 2015 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City with Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 9. 2015, with the family present at 6:00 P.M., a rosary at 6:30 P.M. and a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE.Marie was born on July 20, 1921 in Antelope County, NE, the daughter of Eugene and Caroline (Ziren) Workman. She attended country schools and graduated from high school in Clearwater, NE.She was united in marriage with Harry F. Keefer on September 3, 1938 in Butte, NE. She was a housewife and mother of six children. Harry preceded Marie in death on August 30, 1976.She worked at St. Mary's Food Service in Grand Island, NE from 1956 to 1957. In 1964 she opened the food service at St. Michael's school in South Sioux City. She served as the food supervisor until 1980 when she then became the food services director of South Sioux City and Dakota City schools until retiring in May of 1989. During her time as supervisor, she was the state president of NSFSA and the recipient of many recognitions and awards.Marie enjoyed knitting, embroidery, playing bridge and watching sports on television. She was a member of St.Michael's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and was a former member of the Legion of Mary.She is survived by her children, Elaine Caraway of Doniphan, NE, Sharon K. Johanson of Pleasanton, CA, Deborah Elsey of Eden Prairie, MN, Joe Keefer and his wife, Tracy of South Sioux City, and Celeste Merchant and her husband, Scott of South Sioux City; a brother, Morris Workman and his wife, Sharon of Plattsmouth, NE; a sister, Patricia Reitz of Concordia, KS; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren..Marie was preceded in death by her parents: her husband, Harry; her son, James H. Keefer; and two grandsons.
