PLEASE NOTE THERE HAS BEEN A TIME CHANGE FOR MARILYN'S SERVICE FROM 10 A.M. TO 10:30 A.M. ON FRIDAY
Marilyn Adell Martyn, age 69, of Westfield, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on July 24, 2022. Following a long battle with congestive heart failure and kidney disease, we know she is rejoicing to be with her Saviour in Heaven. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Sioux City Baptist Church in Sioux city, Iowa. The family will be present from 5 pm. to 7 pm. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 am. on Friday, July 29, 2022. The graveside service will follow at Memorial Park cemetery.
Marilyn was born August 29, 1952, in Omaha, Nebraska. Her parents, Galen and Grace (Wallace) Goughnour lovingly chose Marilyn to adopt as their little girl. In her new home in Scranton, Iowa, she grew up on a farm. Loving farm life and sports, she was often known as a tomboy. She especially excelled at basketball, known for her jump shot, making All-Conference, and team captain. After graduating from Scranton Consolidated School in 1970, she attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa to continue her basketball career. It was there she first met her future husband Harry (Al) Martyn. In her first year of college, she decided to turn her focus to nursing. After completing her nurses training in Boone, Iowa, she graduated as a licensed LPN. She worked as an OB nurse at St. Vincent hospital and St. Lukes Hospital.
On November 16, 1974, Marilyn and Al were joined in marriage, at Central Christian Church, in Jefferson, Iowa. After marriage, they moved to Sioux City, Iowa. There they were extremely active in their church, Sioux City Baptist Church. They made a great team working together! There they worked as youth leaders, camp counselors and Sunday school teachers. They put on banquets and were known for their funny skits with their friends, Jay and Mary Albert. Marilyn loved music and used her gift in the church, playing piano, writing songs, singing, and helping with the children’s choir.
Married for 48 years, Marilyn and Al raised three children, Josh, Rory, and Katey. In 1998 they were able to move the family out of town to Westfield, Iowa. The whole family loved spending time outside, hiking, and exploring the countryside. That love of exploring included world travel as well. Her favorite place to visit was Peru, South America. She spent many summers there with her missionary daughter and her family. She loved the people and had a burden to help with missions.
In addition to her nursing work, she was a high school girls basketball coach for many years. She enjoyed passing on her love for the game, and basketball knowledge. Most of all she was a great coach and influence for her players. In later years she enjoyed driving a transit bus in Le Mars, Iowa, taking people to their Dr. appointments. Her love of driving also found her driving for florist distributors in all the surrounding states. She was known for knowing every back road around, and never meeting a stranger.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Harry (Al) Martyn; son Joshua Martyn of Louisville GA; and children Lydia and Elijah Martyn; daughter Aurora (Jason) Dover of Fort Dodge, IA; and children Grace, Jonathan, Joshua, Eliana, Alessandra, and Titus Dover; daughter Katelyn (Nate) Schmidt of Colby KS; brother Brent (Loretta) Goughnour of Jefferson, IA; sister-in-law Stephaine Goughnour of Pine River, MN; many cousins, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews; and newly found sisters Linda Rothlisberger and Rosemarie Rahaim.
Preceding her in death, were both her parents; her brother Brian Goughnour, and son Jonathan David Martyn.
