Marlene Gaye Welding, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on December 20, 2024, in Sioux City, IA, at the age of 91.
Marlene, the daughter of Walter and Edna (Koinzan) Petersen, was born on May 25, 1933, in Elgin, NE. She graduated from Elgin High School before pursuing her passion for nursing at Lutheran Hospital Nursing School in Sioux City, where she graduated in 1955.
On April 1, 1956, she married Allen Edward Welding in Elgin and together they built a family, welcoming two children into their lives. Throughout her nursing career, Marlene served with dedication and compassion, starting her journey working in a Sioux City hospital before becoming a devoted homemaker during her children's early years. She later took on the role of Director of Planned Parenthood, a position she held for 19 years, and concluded her career by working part-time at Mercy Hospital, where her commitment to healthcare continued.
Marlene's impact extended beyond her professional life; she endeared herself to all who knew her with her warm smile and genuine love for her family. She cherished her grandsons, Andrew and Alex, as well as great-grandchildren Ari Allen and Arlee Mae.
A proud servant and leader, Marlene's contributions to her church and community were substantial. She enjoyed volunteering at Morningside Lutheran Church and actively participated in voting precincts. Her engagement with various local groups, including Quota International, the Garden Club, and Bridge Group highlighted her zest for life. An enthusiastic quilter and traveler, Marlene also took joy in entertaining family and friends, creating lasting memories in the process.
She is survived by her daughter Georganne Welding of Sioux City; grandsons Andrew Welding and Alex (April) Welding; great-grandchildren Ari Allen and Arlee Mae Welding; daughter-in-law Sheryl (Greg) Steuk of Sioux City; friend Judy Sweetman of Sioux City; one brother Dale Petersen of Austin, Texas; and one sister-in-law Lageane Petersen of Sioux City.
She is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Allen, who passed away on January 11, 2024; her son Edward Welding; her brother Richard Petersen; and her sister-in-law Joyce Petersen
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Burial will be at Graceland Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
