Mary Delilah Engel, 87, of South Sioux City, NE passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, NE.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 16, 2017 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, NE. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in South Sioux City. Visitation will begin at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 15, 2017, with the family present at 3:00 P.M. and the Rosary recited at 4:00 P.M. at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE.Mary was born on May 14, 1929 in Jackson, NE, the daughter of Raymond and Benetta (Gill) Crowe. She graduated from St. Catherine's Academy in Jackson, NE. She met Darrel Engel at a dance at Providence Hall in Jackson. They dated for two years before they were united in marriage on October 20, 1947 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Together they made their home in South Sioux City and were blessed with five children. Mary was a stay at home mom until Randy was old enough to go to school. She then started her career as Cafeteria Manager at St. Michael's School in South Sioux City, NE.She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and served as President of the Altar Society. Her faith was very important to her and she made sure her family went to weekly mass. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She walked her grandchildren home from school and always made sure she was home after school so the grandchildren could visit. She was an avid gardener, receiving the "Yard of the Month" award several times. She was famous for her cinnamon rolls and pie baking. She and Darrel loved to travel and dance, and spent many vacations at the horse races at Columbus, Grand Island and Hot Springs, Arkansas. She also enjoyed playing bridge and working crossword puzzles. Mary was also very proud of her Irish heritage. She was a quick wit and had many old fashioned sayings that were sure to crack her family up. She was a devoted fan and a whiz at "Wheel of Fortune". Many might's supper was centered around solving the puzzles. Mary had an open door for everyone and was sure that no one ever left her home hungry. She will forever be remembered as having a big heart and a big lap for all her grandchildren. She taught her loved ones the importance of family and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.Survivors include her daughter, Linda (Jim) Kellen; sons, Darrel "Larry" Engel, Terry (Donna) Engel and Mark Engel; daughter-in-law, Starla Engel; grandchildren, Lori (Mike) Kellen Selig and Jase Kellen, Laci, Chance (Trisha), Kayla, Scott (Mylene) and Justin Engel, Travis (Shelly) Noble, Colin and Christopher (Tara) Engel; and 23 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel Engel on July 10, 2013; a son, Randy Engel; parents, Raymond and Benetta Crowe; and siblings, Loretta Kramer, Bonnie Monahan, Veronica Lindquist, Rosemary Crowe, Raymond Crowe, Francis Crowe, Frannie Chaussee, and Gene Crowe.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Mary's name to St. Michael's Parish in South Sioux City, NE.
