Mary A. Nelson

Mary A. Nelson, 72, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at a local hospital. A public visitation will be held from 10 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Monday, December 14, 2020 at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Due to the current covid-19 restrictions, only 15 persons will be allowed in the funeral home at a time and masks are required. A private interment at Memorial Park Cemetery will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Mary was born July 22, 1948 in Fort Collins, Colorado, the daughter of Laurence C. and Charolette (Van Slyke) Meier. She grew up in Randolph, Nebraska where she attended school. In 1964, she met Charles Dye. They married and lived in Fort Collins, CO. In 1967, Mary met and married John L. Nelson. They lived in Sioux City. John preceded Mary in death on January 27, 1997. A few years after marrying, the family moved to California where they remained until 1983. They then moved to Oklahoma for a year before settling in Sioux City. Mary was a homemaker and took care of the children. In the early 1990s, she started working at McDonald’s where she became a manager. She worked there faithfully until her health forced her to retire.

Mary enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family. She was a member of a “twins club,” for mothers with twin children when she lived in California.

Those left to honor her memory are her children, Stacy (Shane Blackford) Dye, Torrie (Jan Hankins) Campbell, Marlene (Dennis) Rees, Raymond (Marcee) Nelson, all of Sioux City, Ronda (Bill) Pantelitis of Sioux Falls, SD; brother Dennis (Tin) Meier of Durham, NC; sisters Rhonda (Brad) Kolbalt of Salix, IA, Connie Tufte of Hermosa, SD; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband John Nelson, son Kenneth Dye, parents Laurence C. and Charolette E (Van Slyke) Meier, brother Gary Meier, her twin Dwayne Meier, and brother-in-law Roger Tufte.
