Mary Elaine (Heinse) Salmen was born in Onawa, Iowa, on December 24, 1952, to Adeline Stanislav and Robert Heinse. She was baptized in Onawa at St. John’s Catholic Church, and was raised Catholic. She lived on a farm between Onawa and Blencoe, Iowa, until she was two years old. The family then moved to Sioux City, where Mary attended grades K-6th at Joy School, 7th – 9th at East Jr., and 10th – 12th at East High School, graduating in 1971.
On July 5, 1975, Mary united in marriage with her best friend, Patrick Salmen, at Immaculate Conception Church in Sioux City. To this union, two wonderful children were born: Cindy Lynn Salmen and Bradly Lee Salmen.
She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in housekeeping.
In 1979, Mary and Patrick bought a cabin in Minnesota. There, they love fishing, family and friends get-togethers, and mostly the peace and relaxation.
Mary worked at St. Boniface Church for 33 years. She started in the Breakfast Program, moved to the Lunch Program, and was janitor of the school. When the school closed, she became the housekeeper of the rectory for the priests at St. Boniface. She made so many friends, and had wonderful bosses during her time there.
She retired following a heart aneurysm in 2017, but had two beautiful granddaughters to keep her busy: Kylee and Talia.
Mary is survived by her husband, Pat Salmen of North Sioux City, SD; daughter, Cindy Salmen of Sioux Falls, SD; son, Bradly Salmen of Dakota Dunes, SD; granddaughters: Kylee Salmen and Talia Salmen, both of Dakota Dunes, SD; sister, Janet Piercy of Herrington, KS; brother, Larry Heinse of Wetumpka, AL; brother-in-law, David Piercy; and sister-in-law, Linda Heinse.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Adeline; a sister, Caroline Bocian; brother-in-law, Ron Bocian III; and a niece, Stacy Heinse.
