Maxine Lebowitz passed away in Sherman Oaks, CA on November 10, 2024. She had been living at an assisted living facility for the last 15 years.
Maxine was born to Edward and Shirley Falk on January 21, 1926, in Omaha, NE. At the age of 10 she moved to Sioux City, IA where she spent most of her life until she moved to Sherman Oaks, CA to be close to her daughter, Diane, and son, Jerry.
Maxine married Leonard (Lenny) Lebowitz in April of 1947. She became a homemaker and found her passion as a cook and baker. She loved to entertain.
Family was very important to Maxine. She was a very loyal mom and Bubbie, supporting everyone in her family equally and always with love. Starting with Junior Hadassah, Maxine has been involved with Hadassah for more than 78 years.
Maxine held many volunteer positions throughout the Jewish Community. She was a Vice President of Beth Shalom Sisterhood and ran the gift shop for 10 years. She served on the Regional Board for Hadassah and as a member of Shaare Zion Women’s League, and she was the last President of Shaare Zion before the merger with Congregation Beth Shalom.
As a volunteer within the Siouxland community, Maxine was a Cub Scout leader, PTA Board Member and Treasurer of Siouxland Youth Hockey Association.
Maxine is survived by her children, Diane Lebowitz-Shien (Bruce Shien), Jerry Lebowitz (Jacki), and Ira Lebowitz (Jessica). Grandchildren, Shealy Mullenaux (Sky), and Ari Lebowitz (Mindy). Great Grand Children, Aviana Mullenaux and Noraleigh Mullenaux, and her sister, Gloria Toles (Howard), as well as many cousins, nephews and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard.
Although she will be missed by her family and those who knew her, Maxine will be happily remembered. May her memory be a blessing to everyone who knew her.
The burial will be at 10:30 am Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Independent Farane Cemetery which is adjacent to Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City. It will be followed by a memorial service and a luncheon at Congregation Beth Shalom in Sioux City. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, Maxine would have liked for donations to be made to either Hadassah or Congregation Beth Shalom.
