Michael Leo “Mike” Monahan, 77 of Sioux City formerly of South Sioux City, Nebraska, passed away from an extended illness on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home, comforted by family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, November 12, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, South Sioux City, Nebraska with Father Paul Albenesius as Celebrant. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 11th at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service, with prayers offered by Father Andrew Sohm, will begin Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Post #307 in South Sioux City (402-494-4543 or their Facebook). Michael was born June 1, 1944 to Leo & Benetta (Crowe) Monahan in Jackson, NE. He was one of nine children. Michael attended St. Michael's Elementary School and Heelan High School, graduating in 1963. He married Jan Withee on May 27, 1967 and they were blessed with four children. He was a construction and iron worker/certified welder before being activated with the 133rd Army National Guard unit to Vietnam in January, 1969. Upon returning home, he continued his career as an iron worker and kiln specialist. Michael was a 3rd & 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus for 40+ years. He was also a Volunteer Fireman in South Sioux for 15 years. Michael enjoyed spending time with family, friends and his grandchildren. He was always the life of the party and never met a stranger! He is survived by his devoted wife Jan, of 54 years; daughters, Michelle (Stacy) Hand, Cedar Rapids, IA, Melanie (Kurt) Eriksen, Homer, NE, and Kathy (Jerry) Moreno, Sioux City, IA; stepson Jeff (April) Sutton, Lincoln, NE; granddaughters Alyssa (Nick) Brodersen, Erika (O'Shea Webster) Eriksen, Avery & Katelyn Hand, Samantha Moreno, and Raini (Ray Schmid) Sutton; grandsons Raymond Michael (Morgan) DeLoa, Zac DeLoa, Joseph Moreno, Michael Moreno, and Ryan (Amanda Crawford) Sutton; ten great-grandchildren, Harper, Emilia, Wyatt, Ruby, Hadleigh, Raymond, Carter, Neely, Adelyn and Aliyah; siblings Claire Thomsen, Pender, NE, Dan (RoseAnn) Monahan, So. Sioux City, Kevin (Jo) Monahan, Sioux City, IA, Tim (Patty Jenkins) Monahan, Jackson, NE, Veronica (Dave) Roberts. Brother-in-Law, and Ken (Carolyn) Withee, York, NE; well as several nieces, nephews & friends. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, son Michael Kelly (died in infancy), sister, Benetta Guldy, brother-in-law, Pete Thomsen, nephew, Paul Thomsen, brother & sister-in-law, James & Ramona Withee and nephew, Kevin Withee.
