Michael A. Petronis, 64, of Sioux City passed away Monday, December 6, 2021 at a local hospital.
Private graveside services with military honors will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences can be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Michael was born March 11, 1957 in Sioux City, the son of Carlyle and Mary Jo (Peters) Petronis. He was raised in Sioux City and baptized at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He attended Immaculate Conception School through the 8th grade where he served as an altar boy. He then attended and graduated East High School in 1975 where he played football and hockey. Following graduation, he attended Western Institute of Technology (WIT) and graduated in 1977 with his two-year degree in drafting. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Michael served in the Navy for 22 years where he was stationed in many places such as San Diego, CA, New Orleans, LA, Bremerton, WA where he lived most of his military career, and deployed to Kuwait. During his long military career, he was awarded several medals and awards and was active during Operation Desert Storm. Following his retirement, he moved back to Sioux City to help care for his parents. He worked at Great Dane in Wayne, NE, as the Safety Director. On September 28, 2013, he married his soul mate, Debra Bales, in Sergeant Bluff. Debra preceded Michael in death on February 17, 2014.
Michael was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. He was also a member of Pheasants Forever and the American Legion Post 307 in South Sioux City, NE. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoor sports, gardening, and took immense pride in his yard. He was an organ and tissue donor and donated financially to many non-profit organizations.
Those left to honor his memory are his children Aaron Petronis of Denver, CO and Alexia (Ryan) McGarvin of Broken Arrow, OK; step-children Chris (Tricia) Mayer of Elk Run Heights, IA and Melonie (Cory) Barnes of Sioux City; several step-grandchildren; siblings Julie (Jerrie) Petronis-Ludwigs of Sioux City, Jean Blakesley of Escondido, CA, Steven (Joanie) Petronis of Sloan, IA, Patricia (Danny) Arrington of Palm Bay, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and his beloved dog, Belle in November 2021.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to Trinity Heights, Wounded Warriors Project, or Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.).
