Orville V. Bailey, 91, of North Sioux City, passed away on October 1, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness.
A funeral service to honor Orville's life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. The burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born on February 24, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Esther (Christensen) Bailey. Orville led a life characterized by dedication, hard work, and love for his family.
Orville’s service to his country began when he enlisted in the United States Army in 1952, where he proudly served until his honorable discharge in 1954. This experience instilled in him values that he carried through his life. Orville married Barbara Lowe on February 22, 1955, in Sioux City. To this union, four children were born.
From a young age, Orville developed a strong work ethic, which would guide him throughout his life. He began his career working for his father at Siouxland Sand and Gravel before taking a significant step in 1973 when he purchased the business. His commitment to his work was evident, and he continued to manage the company with passion until his retirement in 1999.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Orville had a variety of hobbies and interests that enriched his life. He had a love for yard work and gardening, taking pride in maintaining his home. Orville also enjoyed adventures with Barb in their RV, traveling on cruises, and visiting all 50 states during his journeys. In his younger years, he participated in a bowling league and various card clubs, finding joy in these social activities.
Orville’s loving spirit will be remembered by those who survive him, including his devoted wife of 69 years, Barbara "Barb" Bailey. He is also survived by his children: George (Jerri) Bailey of North Sioux City, SD, Dan Bailey of Arlington, VA, Connie Carey of Apache Junction, AZ, and Randy (DeNise) Bailey of McCook Lake, SD. The legacy of Orville Bailey lives on through his 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alden Duane Bailey, his sister Lou Ellen Gust, and his grandson Robert Bailey.
