Philip John Nagel

d. May 16, 2021

Philip John Nagel of Hermitage, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2021, at Tri Star Centennial hospital in Nashville of heart failure.  Phil was born on the farm in Grant Center, Iowa, where he attended the two room school through the eighth grade.  He then went to Mapleton and graduated from Maple Valley Community High School in 1950.   Phil was a three letter athlete in football, baseball, and basketball.

After graduating, Phil stayed on the farm and farmed up until 1986 when he moved to Cameron, Missouri.  Phil did custom farm work near Cameron for several years and then moved to Warsaw, Missouri, where he managed a marina and provided services for fishermen and recreational boaters.  During that time, Phil met many people and made many new friends.  Many enjoyed Phil's friendly demeanor and wide variety of stories.  In 2014, he moved to Salix, Iowa, to be closer to family. He belonged to the Sloan Golf Course and spent much of his time at the course.

Phil loved bowling league and tournaments in Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska.  He also enjoyed playing golf and remembered to his last day the day the one time he out drove his son Aric.  Phil loved the annual trip to Minnesota to his sister’s cabin where his brother Leonard and he would fish for hours on end.  Several of the more recent trips fishing included Scott Blakely and they talked up until the last day of making another trip. He enjoyed watching reruns of the classic westerns on TV, reading detective stories, westerns, and books written by Vince Flynn.

Phil is survived by one sister, Eva of McClelland, Iowa, two children, Aric of Casa Grande, Arizona, and Valerie (John) of Hermitage, Tennessee, grandchildren Rachel (Andrew) of Sioux City, Krystin  (Ben) of Le Mars, Adam of Springfield, Tennessee, and Melanie of Casa Grande, Arizona, great grandchildren Caden and Marissa of Le Mars, and Emmet of Sioux City, many other relatives and friends.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, brothers:  Lloyd, Richard, Everett, Leonard, and two sons, Ramon and Steven.
