Born on May 17, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa to Edward and Mary (Murray) Motz, Rick was a dedicated family man and a fixture in local sports. He earned his stripes both as an athlete, playing basketball at Heelan High School (graduating in 1968) and Briar Cliff University (graduating in 1972), and as an advocate for the community. After college, Rick continued his passion for sports by playing fast- and slow-pitch softball as well as officiating high school football. Rick later took up the game of golf and created more memories than can be counted with his wife, sons and life-long friends. Whether it was his leadership roles at SIMPCO, Area Agency on Aging, or Siouxland Community Health Center, Rick worked tirelessly for the well-being of those around him. In 2003, he took his passion for service a step further by founding Pickerman’s Soup & Sandwich, a place where his friendly demeanor and love for connecting with people made it a local favorite.
Rick’s devotion to family was a cornerstone of his life. He treasured the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and his beloved wife, Mary, whom he married in 1972. His joy was evident in cheering on his children and grandchildren at their activities and often being seen in the stands of both Heelan and Briar Cliff athletics. Rick frequently showcased his handyman skills including the build of his current home as well as lending a hand to numerous basement and deck renovations. Rick will forever be remembered by his grandchildren for his trademark dance move, asking about Mrs. Beasley, and countless jokes.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Holy Cross Parish or the athletic departments of Bishop Heelan or Briar Cliff University—an apt tribute to a man who supported these schools and parish throughout his life.
Rick leaves behind his loving wife Mary, his children Craig Motz of Sioux City, IA, Kristy (Mike) Carstensen of Lakeville, MN, and Jeff Motz (Christin Lantz) of Johnston, IA, his brothers Robert (Jean) Motz, Dennis (Jan) Motz, William (Deb) Motz, Cesar Narvaez, brother-in-law Dr. Richard Davidson, his grandchildren, Alexis, Kaylee, Delainey, Harlen, Malia, Jaxon, Zavi, and Luci, and his beloved dog, Murray. Rick also leaves behind many other family members and friends who will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marilyn Davidson.
