Rita M. Flanagan, 84 of Sioux City, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at her residence.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2021 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Father Jeremy Wind as Celebrant.  Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in South Sioux City, Nebraska.  Visitation will be on Thursday, May 20th at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Sharing of Memories beginning at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening.  Online condolences may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com

Rita was born on October 4, 1936 in Ponca, Nebraska to Peter F. and E. Lucille (Manley) Rush.  She graduated from Bishop Heelan High School.   She married James R. “Jim” Flanagan, Jr. on July 21, 1956 in South Sioux City, Nebraska.  The family lived in both South Sioux, and Sioux City, while Rita worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone, Zenith, and Heartland Chiropractic, where she enjoyed being a receptionist. 

 Rita was a proud member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, where she also was involved with funeral dinners, the soup kitchen, and the bargain center.  She also enjoyed the Sioux City Community Theater, bowling, golfing, cooking, baking, working with plants, along with the Wednesday Book Club.

Rita is survived by her three children, Kim Marron of Tremont, Illinois, Greg (Cathy) Flanagan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Becky (Kirk) Hoffman of Bellevue, Nebraska; two sisters and their husbands Elaine (Gene) Kanaly of Sioux City and Marilyn (Tom) Malek of Weeping Water, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim on May 30, 2012, and son-in-law Gerry Marron.

Rita’s grandsons will be pallbearers, and her granddaughters will be honorary pallbearers.
