He was married to Delores Hernandez, the love of his life and his crossword puzzle muse, for 64 years. Robert served in the United States Air Force for 20 years. He was stationed in the Midwest, and the family spent 2 years on Guam. He was stationed at Strategic Air Command twice. He was a medic and transitioned into medical administration during the course of his career. Bob was a veracious reader, especially liking westerns. He loved fishing and spend many on hour on the banks of the Missouri River waiting for the next Big One to swim by. He enjoyed many exciting hours mushroom hunting and had a keen eye. Bob had a sweet tooth and his favorites were chocolate-covered peanuts and cookies (preferably homemade). He played cards and taught his kids and grandkids how to at an early age. Bob designed and built their dream home alongside Delores in Jefferson, South Dakota. It was wilderness when they first got their property. He built a road leading to where their home would be, with his brother-in-law, Don Jorgensen. Delores and Bob ran their camping business, Cottonwood Landing, there for 25 years. He kept physically fit by chopping wood for the wood stove that heated their home for 35 years. Bob loved his church, First Unitarian Church, and regularly attended with Delores. He was known for throwing out a funny, unexpected line in the middle of a crowded room which would have everyone laughing. Bob is survived by his wife, Dolores; daughter Dee Cayson and spouse Shawn; son Robert Phillips Jr. and spouse Susanna (Shell); daughter Kelly Kamowski; grandsons Max Kamowski and Elvis Phillips; granddaughters Madeline Kamowski and Katie Cayson. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Leora Phillips and his sisters, Joyce Olson and Shirley Jorgensen.
