Ronald D. (Dino) Vedin, 68 of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at UnityPoint – St. Lukes Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa due to complications from ALS.
Ronald Dean Vedin was born May 2, 1955, in Sioux City, Iowa to Ronald Henry and Harriet (Frazier) Jackson-Smith. He was the eldest of four sons.
At the age of three, Dino, as he was more commonly known, moved to California with his parents. The family settled in Burbank, where Dino grew up, attended school, and began his working career. He returned to Sioux City in his mid-twenties.
After working for a few years, Dino landed the job that would define his career – he started at the Sioux City Auditorium as a laborer, helping with events at the facility. Through his position, Dino became involved with the youth hockey program, as a Zamboni driver, which led to his work with the Musketeers. Over the years, he rose from a part-time laborer to a full-time crew leader, first at the Auditorium, then at the Tyson Events Center, but his favorite part of the job was working with the Musketeers. Dino spent twenty-seven years in the role of “favorite Zamboni driver” of his thirty-one years overall spent between the two buildings. He had deep dedication for being at every home hockey game for 30 years. He enjoyed visiting with children in the Zamboni pit and they often left with a hockey puck or souvenir. He even had a special section named after him in the old auditorium called “Dino’s Den.” He was awarded Siouxland’s local celebrity by the Weekender. And, in the old auditorium’s final hockey game ever in December of 2003, Dino sang The National Anthem!
In addition to his love of hockey, Dino also enjoyed attending concerts, going to auctions, and collecting albums, CD’s, and music memorabilia. He was especially proud of his album collection, numbering in the thousands and covering all genres.
Dino married fellow hockey fan Amy A. Gohl of Sioux Falls, South Dakota on November 19, 2004 in Sioux Falls. They welcomed their son, Ronald (Ronnie) Dean Henry Vedin into the world on October 16, 2006. The three of them could almost always been found together at every Musketeers game since Ronnie’s 3rd week of life. In total, the three of them attended close to 550 games together.
Dino loved his three children very much: Chad Fisher who was born April 30, 1979; Deana Vedin born January 4, 1989 and Ronnie in 2006. He also added his only grandchild, Emmalee Fisher, to the family on December 31, 1998.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife Amy and children Ronnie, Deana, and Chad, all of Sioux City; granddaughter Emmalee Fisher of Sioux City; brother John Vedin of Las Vegas, Nevada; parents-in-law Don and Judy Gohl of Sioux Falls; Amy’s siblings; several nephews and nieces and numerous other relatives, friends, and fans.
Dino was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald Tyson Vedin; his parents; grandparents; brothers Kevin W. Vedin and Frazier L. Vedin; and several other relatives.
