Ruth was born June 22, 1923 in Crook, SD, the daughter of Tony and Edna (Benson) VanVliet. Ruth grew up during the Depression and; like many others, her family faced many challenges. She attended Orange City, IA schools for most of her life until high school when her family had to move to Alton, IA. Ruth enjoyed her time in Alton, and graduated from Alton High School . The family then moved to Sioux City, IA where she helped support her family.
Ruth married Kenneth Bradstreet on May 1, 1946 in Sioux City. To this union, three boys were born. Ruth devoted her life to being a wife and mother. Ruth was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and both Kenneth and Ruth devoted themselves to the activities and sports of their three boys. She was a beautiful quilter and experienced in embroidery and sewing. Ruth enjoyed bowling and crossword puzzles, a lifelong reader, and avid traveler with her husband Kenneth. She was a Kansas City Royals baseball fan who listened to most games on the radio and also looked forward to the college basketball season each year and never missed a Kansas Jayhawk game if she could help it.
