Ruth E. Scherner, 95, of South Sioux City, NE passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at a Sioux City hospital.Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 11, 2011 at Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, NE with Pastor Randy Knuth officiating. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery in Dakota City, NE. Visitation will be held at the church from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 10, 2011. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE. Condolences may be posted online at www.mohrfuneralhome.com.Ruth was born in rural Sloan, IA on August 11, 1916, the daughter of Owen W. and Ethel L. (Davis) Lester. She attended the Blyberg and Homer Schools in Homer, NE and was a lifelong resident of Dakota County. She married Glenn L. Scherner on December 15, 1934. The couple farmed in and around Dakota County, then moved to South Sioux City, NE. Ruth continued as a homemaker, but also babysat for many years for many South Sioux City children, many of whom had kept in touch with her throughout the years. Glenn passed away on June 9, 1988.Ruth was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, the South Sioux City Eagle's Club, and she was active in the South Sioux Senior Center. She loved to dance, play cards, and spend time with her family and many friends. She was an excellent cook, leaving behind many recipes for her family to carry on in the tradition.Survivors include 2 children, Leon and Joyce Scherner of Akron, IA and Charlene Scherner Klink of Glendale, CA; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Owen W. "Brownie" and Dorothy Lester of South Sioux City, NE; sister-in-law, Helen Lester of Sacramento, CA; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Owen and Ethel Lester; her husband, Glenn Scherner; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lowell Lester, Rolland and Eva Lester, Winston Lester, and Robert and Joyce Lester.
