Santiago (Jimmy) Guevara, Jr, 64 years old, a longtime resident of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away at CHI Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska following a long hospitalization. He fought a hard fight, but with family at his bedside he gained his wings and slipped away peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 15, 2025. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Santiago was born on November 3, 1960, in Laredo, Texas. He moved to Sioux City in 1984 because of work, and he met Sherry Lynn Jessen in August of 2010. They later married on September 5, 2020. He had many hobbies and loves, but his favorite pastime was to spend time by the water with his wife, Sherry, and their dog, “Quita”. It didn’t matter if it was an ocean, river, or lake, Jimmy wanted to be on or by the water with the people he loved, whether it was in a boat or on the sandy banks just relaxing. With his love of the water came a love of fishing as well, and he always enjoyed being “gone fishing”. Jimmy loved his family deeply, especially the kids, and he would take his grandkids or nieces and nephews with him and Sherry when they would go to the lake anytime he could. When he was not out fishing, he was spending time with his dog, Chiquita. She followed him everywhere. They were very close, and he missed her so much while he was in the hospital. He was counting down the days in the hospital until he could get home to see his “Quita” again.
Along with his love of the water and his family, Jimmy also enjoyed doing things that would make his family happy and spending time with them. He liked to have a good barbecue, always appointing himself as the head grill master and chef, and he loved listening and dancing to his favorite Tejano music. He enjoyed watching and cheering for his team, the Chicago Bears, and also watching his favorite soap opera,”The Young and the Restless.” Jimmy had a “heart of gold” and would do absolutely anything for anyone that needed his help. He had many titles and roles in his life, but husband, brother, father, and grandfather were probably the ones he was most proud to hold. All of the people he loved in his life will forever wish they had more time to spend with him.
Santiago “Jimmy” is survived by his wife, Sherry; his children Maricella Guevara and her fiancé, Russ Little, Gabriela Blakey, Santiago Guevara III, Tiffany (Stephen) Campbell, and Brody Osterbuhr; sisters, Velma (Keith) Brandt, Viola Guevara, Celia (Juan) Alvarado, and Diana Guevara, and brother Jose Rene (Jennifer) Guevara, as well as a step-brother, Jose Fidencio Guevara, his step-mother, Mercedes Guevara, 28 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, his in-laws, Roger and Marlene Jessen, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom (Becky) Jessen, Tim (Karen) Jessen, Debbie Jessen, Cindy (Gaspar) Mendoza, and Kim (Javier) Tapia.
He was preceded in death by his mother Esther S. Guevara, his father Santiago Guevara, his sister Dalia Saez, his grandson Austin Blakey, as well as many aunts and uncles.
