Sarah was born on October 4, 1935 in Sioux City to Virgil and Ellen (Lamb) DeWitt. She was raised in Sioux City, and graduated from Heelan High School in 1953. She then attended the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, MN, for two years, before completing her college education at the University of South Dakota, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s of Education.
Following college, Sarah moved to Boynton Beach, FL, where she taught for one year before moving back to Sioux City and marrying Richard Jorstad on June 20, 1959 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City. To this union, two children were born. Sarah went on to teach for a couple years in Sergeant Bluff before taking on her proudest role, homemaker and mother to John and Julie.
Sarah was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Church, where she was baptized, married, and an involved member for many years.
She was in the American Girls Book Club, a member of PEO, Junior League, St. Theresa’s Study Club, and the Sun Valley Women’s Golf League. Sarah was an avid bridge player every Monday; there was no Monday if they didn’t play bridge! She loved spending time vacationing in Florida in the winter, and at Madden’s in Minnesota in the summer. She loved to bake, and was famous for her Norwegian Rye Bread, potato salad, and oyster stew.
Left to cherish her memory include her husband, Richard Jorstad of Sioux City; her children: John Jorstad (Shannon) of Sioux City; and Julie Jorstad (Shawn Goslar) of Sioux City; brother, John “Stub” DeWitt (Judy) of California; sister, Roseanna “Posey” Young of Denver, CO; grandchildren: Lincoln Goslar; and Matthew, Ethan, and Mary Jorstad; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary Ellen “Pidge” Howe (Bob); brother, William “Buck” DeWitt (Joanie); brother-in-law, Fred Young; and sister-in-law, Helen DeWitt.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sarah’s name to Bishop Heelan Catholic School.
