Shirley Mae Plummer

August 6, 1934 — January 8, 2022

Shirley Mae Plummer, 87 of Sioux City, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 8, 2022.  Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Jeremy Robertson officiating.  Burial will follow at Logan Park Cemetery.  Visitation, with family present, will begin at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, at the church, prior to the services.  Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com

 

Shirley was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 6, 1934.  She received her general education in New Orleans where she met and married Lawrence Plummer.  From that union, 8 children where born, which there are four left to cherish her memory; Jenell Mosley, Shirley Dowd, Linda Plummer, all of Sioux City, and Lawrence Plummer, Jr (Toni) of Minneapolis, Minnesota. 

 

Mother Plummer moved to Sioux City in 1958 joining her husband, who was working on the railroad.  She started working in the service sector of Sioux City before going into the meat packing plants, Iowa Beef, then Swifts.  Shirley eventually went into daycare, where she found her calling.  She was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church before becoming a faithful member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Mother Plummer taught Sunday School and did mission work here in town, where she prayed for many.  Shirley served on the board of Siouxland Community Health Center for 3 to 4 years and although she was never officially was nominated for Woman of Excellence Award, she certainly was one of integrity.  She loved to sing and play her little piano and organ.

 

Left to cherish her memory are her four surviving children; a sister Jerlyn Jones; brother William “Cephus” Doyle (Johnnie) of New Orleans; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and dear friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, four children Melvin, Phillip, and Mondel Plummer and Brenda Bryant, brothers Joseph, Alfred, and Melvin Polk, sister Frances Franklin, grandchildren Royal Bryant, Andre Plummer, and Christina Plummer.
