Sidney J. Hoover

Sidney J. Hoover, 95, of Sioux City, passed away Monday, August 1, 2022 at Sunrise Retirement Home.  Private graveside services were held at Memorial Park Cemetery.  

Sidney was born the son of Sidney L. and Eleanor (Raker) Hoover on July 8, 1927 in Chancellor, South Dakota.  Following graduation from Central High School in Sioux City in 1945, he entered the United States Navy.  On April 30, 1950 he was united in marriage to Lois C. Hollister in Sioux City at First Presbyterian Church.

Sidney worked in the abstract business for 49 years until his retirement in 1995.

He was a 50-year member of Morningside Presbyterian Church of Sioux City, where he was a Sunday School teacher, Benevolence Treasurer, and served as a Deacon and Elder.  He was Clerk of Session for two pastors.

He was a member of the Sioux City Noon Lions Club for over 55 years and served as its President and its Secretary for many years.  He was a District Governor for the Lions of Iowa, a Trustee on the Iowa Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, and President of the Editorial Board of the Iowa Lions magazine.  He received the International President’s Award and the 1st International President’s Leadership Award given in the state of Iowa, as well as the Melvin Jones, Warren Coleman, and Bud Klise Awards.

Sidney is survived by his daughters, Nancy (Dennis) LaBrune, Janet Smothers, and Carol (Stan) Weatherwex; grandchildren, Sarah (Matthew) LaBrune-Jongeling, Jim Weatherwex, and David LaBrune; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; sister, Beverly Cummings; and son-in-law, Denny Smothers.
