Terrance W. “Terry” Koebernick, 80, of Dakota City, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2021. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 12, 2021 at Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. To view the service online please visit www.hopelutheranssc.com/live. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 11, 2021 all held at the church. Burial will be at Dakota City Cemetery.
Terry was born the son of Walter and Esther (Hauf) Koebernick on July 21, 1941 in Minot, North Dakota. He attended a rural one room schoolhouse until 8th grade. He graduated from Concordia High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. He later graduated from Minot State College. Terry married Marsha Sandin on August 1, 1964 in Racine, Wisconsin. To this union three children were born, Katie, Doug, and Mike. Marsha passed away in 1996. He later married Laverne Richau on March 22, 1997 in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
He taught in North Dakota and Iowa before beginning his career in South Sioux City in 1976. He was a history teacher, coach, and Athletic Director until his retirement in 2001. He was proud to have started the women’s basketball program in 1976 but his real passion was coaching track and field. After his retirement, he coached high jump for Morningside College for 13 years.
Terry enjoyed gardening, woodworking, golfing, and playing cards. He liked to travel with his wife and watch his grandkids’ activities. He was an avid Husker and Vikings fan.
He was a longtime active member of Hope Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Optimist Club.
In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to the Optimist Club or the South Sioux City High School Athletic Fund.
Terry is survived by his wife, Laverne Koebernick of Dakota City; children, Katie (Joe) King Lower of Bronson, Doug (Carry) Koebernick of Lincoln, and Mike (Sarah) Koebernick of Lincoln; step daughters, Gloria Denise of Charlotte, North Carolina and Tina (Stan) Gooch of Marian, Illinois; grandchildren, AJ, Tasha, Mason, Madison, Max, Jackson, Sam, and Jon; four step grandchildren, Danny, KeAnn, Mollie, and Logan; and two step great-grandchildren, Adelyn and Laynie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marsha; brothers, Bob and Neil; son-in-law, Jeff King; and sisters-in-law, Julie Koebernick and Gretchen Woolery.
