Theodore "Ted" Hayden

Theodore “Ted” Hayden, 95, of Westfield, IA passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2022 at home. A Celebration of Life with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at the Dennis Sohl Center in the Hillview Recreational Area in Hinton. Ted was born on June 3, 1927 on the family farm near Sioux Point, SD (now Dakota Dunes) to Frederick and Mabel (Deloney) Hayden. He attended Sioux City Schools, including Central High School until the 11th grade, when he joined the United States Navy at age 17 during World War II. He served from 1945 to 1946, including at the United States Naval Training Center Great Lakes, the Navy Yard in Washington D.C., and aboard the USS Dayton (CL-105). On August 9, 1952 he married Eunice L. Ritchie in Fremont, Nebraska. The couple moved to rural Westfield, IA. He worked for the Great Northern Railroad for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1989. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed fishing in Oregon and hunting in Montana with his brothers. A true outdoorsman, he was a mentor to many, and especially loved passing his skills on to young people. He is survived by his daughter, Teresa M. Kaye of Westfield; son, Dale T. Hayden of North Sioux City; grandchildren: Sarah E. Kaye of Westfield; Travis H. Kaye of Chico, CA; and Stephanie Page of Hills, MN; five brothers; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his wife Eunice; his parents; and a brother, Vinton Hayden.
