He deeply wanted to live as long as his mother, who passed away at the age of 101 but missed his goal by slightly over a year. As a child, his family lived in Provo, UT; Berkeley, CA; and Keeler, CA.While in school, he tried a number of ways of earning money, including pedaling newspapers at the Bamberger railroad stop on Center Street in Provo, and also moving the local ward's milk cows to the ward pasture every morning and back every night. When older in his teens, he worked at harvesting Christmas trees in the winter in Rock Canyon, selling them to raise money. He graduated from Provo High School in 1933 during the Great Depression years. Eventually he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and spent the next 18 months helping to build retaining ditches in the upper reaches of the Wasatch Mountains east of Utah, Salt Lake, and Davis counties, flood control dams in the valleys, and the Aspen Grove amphitheater on the eastern slopes of Mt. Timpanogos. He always enjoyed the mountains while fishing, climbing Mt. Timpanogos numerous times, and hunting in the many mountain ranges throughout Utah. He met his future companion, Helen Grosvenor, in Long Beach, CA in 1937 while she was working as a housemaid and he was working in an aircraft factory. They were married in Dakota City, Nebraska on April 9, 1938. Two children were later born, Thomas on April 2, 1939, and Diane on April 2, 1941, both in the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City. Dad served in the Utah National Guard and US Navy, and worked for the US Post Office and US Labor Department until his retirement. Upon retirement in 1970, Dad and Mom moved from California to Ponca, Nebraska, where Mom grew up. They bought a small farm where Dad enjoyed working the land and pheasant hunting with his favorite dog, a beautiful Irish Setter. He is survived by his children, Thomas Allen Carey (Karen Tibbitts) of Alpine UT and Diane Elaine Robinson (Wallace Robinson) of Okanogan, WA; 10 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 39 great-great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his father and mother, Richard Read Carey and Sylvia Stout Carey; 4 brothers, Richard 'Dick' Wilson (Elaine Inez Smith) Carey, Kenneth (Teddie) Carey, Robert 'Bob' Richie (Margaret 'Micky' House) Carey; a sister, Larene Carey (Samuel Blumenfeld); and youngest brother, David. The family expresses great appreciation to the Apple Springs and Welcome Home facilities in Omak, WA who provided loving care to Dad in his final years.
