Vince was born April 24, 1935 to George and Mary (May) Hoefling at home in rural Merrill, IA. He graduated from Merrill High in 1953 and after that moved to Seattle, WA and worked for Boeing. He was called back home after the death of his father to help his mother on the family farm.
Vince met Madonna Barkley and they married on June 11, 1960. This union was blessed with eight children. They moved to rural Hinton in the fall of 1971 to the family farm. Vince began his career at the Sioux City Stockyards as a laborer in the 1960’s and worked his way up to become co-owner of Frank E. Scott Commission Company, operating it until the day the stockyards closed in 2002. He had the honor of selling the last pen of hogs at the historic venue. He recently stated he “enjoyed every day he went to work.”
Vince loved stock car racing and playing baseball in his younger years and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He was a loyal Hinton Blackhawks fan where his children and many grandchildren attended school and participated in sports and activities. He could often be found at a Friday night home football game working the chain gang with a smile on his face. In addition, he looked forward to his daily morning coffee with friends in Hinton and enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Canada.
Vince took great pride in taking good care of his Black Angus cows and calves for many years. He was a longtime member of the Plymouth County Fair Board and loved being a 4-H leader for many years, culminating with being inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. He was also a member of St. Joseph Church Ellendale.
Vince is survived by his wife, Madonna of Hinton; eight children: Gail (John) Eliades of Merrill, Kevin Hoefling of Hinton, Kirk Hoefling of Versailles, KY, Kenny (Bridget) Hoefling of Hinton, Cathy (Rick) Wegher of Dakota Dunes, SD, Duane “Bucko” Hoefling of Ramstein A.F.B.
