William "Bill" L. Church

William L. "Bill" Church, 77, of Dakota City, NE passed away on Friday, October 26, 2018 at his residence while surrounded by his family.Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE. Visitation with the family present will begin at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.Bill was born March 2, 1941 in Wakefield, NE, the son of Lyle and Alen (Carlson) Church. He graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, NE in 1960. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. Bill married Susan Smith in 1966 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, NE. They settled in rural Dakota City and were blessed with three children. He worked as an ironworker for many years, then in maintenance for John Morrell until his retirement in 2000. Susan passed away on May 17, 2016 after 50 years of marriage.He was a member of the South Sioux City American Legion, President of the South Sioux Senior Center, and coached youth baseball for many years. He bred and raised chocolate labs for 20 years, loved to play pool, hunt, and fish, and was an avid Cornhusker fan.Survivors include a son, Brian Church of Dakota City, NE; Brian's daughter, Briann Church; a daughter, Angela & Mark Schmith of Jackson, NE and their children, Taylor, Kelsey and Nick Schmith; sisters, Jackie Boden of Sterling, NE and Judy & Dave Burhoop of Bancroft, NE; several nieces and nephews; and many other family members.He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Church; a son, James Church; his parents, Lyle and Alen Church; a brother, James Church; and brother-in-law, Don Boden.
