William R. Hanna

William R. Hanna, 94, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at a local hospital. 

Services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Monday, November 29, 2021 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Kenny Hsu officiating.  Visitation with the family present will be Sunday, November 28, 2021 from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. and a Prayer Service at 5:00 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Bill was born March 4, 1927 in Spencer, South Dakota, the son of William and Nellie (Helvig) Hanna.  He graduated from Spencer High School.  Bill started working as a scale mechanic for Fairbanks Scales, and then in 1950 was drafted into the United States Army, where he served two years in the Korean War.  After Bill was honorably discharged in 1952, he continued to work with Fairbanks Scales until 1967.  Bill married Vera Jaton on May 10, 1953 in Mitchell, SD.  To this union, five children were born.  In 1968, Bill founded Siouxland Scale Service and ran the business with his family until retirement in 1997.  After retirement, Bill enjoyed his farm where he raised sheep and registered Angus.  He enjoyed gardening and construction work, and loved spending time with his grandchildren on the farm.  Bill was a member of the American Legion, and an active member and Elder at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. 

Survivors include his wife Vera Hanna of Sioux City, children:  Richard (Capistrana) Hanna of Pleasant Hill, IA, Lori (Mark) Treft of Sioux City, William Jr. (Christiane) Hanna of Sioux City, Timothy (Lisa) Hanna of Sioux City, and Gary (Elizabeth) Hanna of Sioux City; 23 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and a sister Marilyn of Palo Alto, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers:  Don, Glen, Dale, Cyril, Norman, Myron, and Darrell.
