William "Bill" Lyle

Sioux City

William “Bill” W. Lyle, 97 of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 24, 2025 at Whitfield United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bill was born the son of Harry and Mildred (Sherwood) Lyle on March 2, 1928 in Kingsley, Iowa. He graduated from Leeds High School. Bill enlisted in the Army and was a Tech Sgt, spending the majority of his time in Japan after they surrendered. Bill met Muriel Waldemer at Morningside College. They were married May 24, 1953 in Pisgah, Iowa. They spent a few years in Swea City and rural Spencer, Iowa before settling in Sioux City.

Bill was a teacher, coach, and athletic director for 41 years in the Sioux City schools. He taught health and psychology before becoming the athletic director at West High School for many years. He coached basketball, football, golf, and track.

Bill enjoyed playing golf well into his 90s, playing cards, doing puzzles and spending time with family. He started running after age 40 and participated in many 5k and 10k races, which surely added to his good health and long life. He also loved traveling with Muriel to visit their family scattered across the country.

Bill was a longtime member of Whitfield United Methodist Church where he spent many years cooking the popular peanut brittle for their fundraisers. Bill and Muriel were instrumental in starting Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Sioux City.

Bill is survived by his wife of 71 years, Muriel Lyle; children, Lori (Steve) Hillberg, Dave (Kristin) Lyle, Vicki Issen, Jeff (Jodi) Lyle, and Tom (Janice) Lyle; 11grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; sister, Mary Ferrari.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Shirley, Max, and Jan.
