Michael J. Hogan

SIOUX CITY -- Michael J. Hogan, 61, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Craig (Neb.) Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., at the church. A coffee and cake reception will follow the memorial service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Michael was born Jan. 20, 1949, in Oakland, Neb., to Lane David and Mary Elizabeth (Wray) Hogan. He received his bachelor of music education degree from Morningside College in 1971 and his master of music education degree from the University of South Dakota in 1979.

Mr. Hogan taught instrumental music for 14 years including positions at Crestland Community School in Early, Iowa, Manilla Community Schools in Manilla, Iowa, East Junior and Senior High Schools, Herbert Hoover Junior High School, North High School and various elementary schools in Sioux City. In 1985, he left the teaching profession to purchase Jay's Music in Sioux City.

He had attended various conducting symposia with John Paynter, Frederick Fennell, H. Robert Reynolds, Mallory Thompson, Carl St. Clair and Elizabeth Green. He founded the All-American Concert Band in 1990 and directed it for many years. The band presented concerts that were held to raise funds for worthwhile community projects. In 2005, he was awarded the annual Service Above Self award by the Downtown Rotary Club for his generosity and leadership.

Mr. Hogan was a member of Landmark Lodge 103 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite Bodies and Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. He was the accompanist for the Chanters when they made their first trip to sing with the 1,000 Welsh Male Voice Choirs in London's Royal Albert Hall in 1986. He also was the organist at Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux City from 1981 to 1993 and then again from 1997 to 2009.

Survivors include his brother, Dave Hogan of Ponca, Neb.; nieces and nephews, Julie Hogan, Jackie Hogan, Nick Hogan, Jeff Bachman, Jill Hitz and Jay Bachman; and his long time best friend, Joe Goulette.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Brian Hogan; and a sister, Virginia Hogan.
