Barbara Jean Smith

Barbara Jean Smith, 78, of South Sioux City passed away Friday, December 9, 2022 at her home surrounded by family following a brief illness.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 17, 2022 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with Reverend Mark McGlohon officiating.  Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Barb was born September 5, 1944 in Sioux City, the daughter of August and Avonell (Porter) Fredette.  She graduated from Central High School.  Barb married Dennis R. Smith on May 16, 1964 in Sioux City.  To this union, five daughters were born.  Barb worked at Zenith and then for the South Sioux City Community Schools in the lunchroom program for many years before retirement.  After retirement, Barb worked at Walmart.  She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, and playing bingo.  Her greatest love was time spent in the kitchen baking and making popcorn and fudge surrounded by her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Dennis Smith; daughters:  Brenda (Danny) McNear of Newcastle, NE, Julie (Matt) McFarland of Sioux City, Pamela (Brian) Madsen of Turin, IA, Linda Smith and significant other Don of Dakota Dunes, SD, and Melissa (Mike) Surber of Newcastle, NE; grandchildren:  Travis (Wendy) McNear, Nicholas McNear, Mac (Michaela) McFarland, Grace Madsen, Emily Madsen, Chloe Smith, Aleisha Surber (Adam Clark), and Kirsten Surber; great grandchildren:  Becka, Carter, Stockden, Bretton, Braycen, and Beckett; sister Nancy Surber of Sioux City; brother Brian (Sue) Fredette of Council Bluffs, IA; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Beverly Berge and Bobette Gonzales, brother Robert Fredette, and a great grandson Landen McNear.
