Mina Karcher

April 4, 1921 — December 13, 2022

Mina Karcher, an inspiration to all, peacefully passed away at her home in Sioux City, Iowa, on December 14, 2022.

Mina was born on April 4, 1921, in Weingarten, Germany.  She immigrated with her family to the United States when she was a young child. The family settled in Sioux City where Mina graduated from Central High School in 1938.  She attended and  graduated from Morningside College in 1942 with a degree in English.  She taught high school English for one year in Elk Point, South Dakota, before entering the journalism field and working for TIME and LIFE magazines. Then, she worked many years at the University of Illinois.  She loved traveling and living in Chicago until retirement when she returned back to Sioux City.

Through her retirement years, she enjoyed attending movies, concerts, and other cultural events with her friends.  She enjoyed all the city, state, and world news through reading the Wall Street Journal, Sioux City Journal, and the New York Times each day.  She loved watching sports on television, especially golf, tennis, and basketball.  When celebrating her birthday, Mina said, “We can celebrate my birthday 365 days of the year – I do not want to miss the NCAA basketball tournament.”

Rest in peace, Mina.  You have led a full life with your adventures, your travels, your work, your family, and your friends.  You will be missed.  You were an inspiration to all of us.

Mina was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Louise Karcher, and her siblings; Lena, Augie, and Edna.  She is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A private family burial will be held in the spring.  Condolences may be sent to Meyers Brothers Funeral Home, 3220 Stone Park, Sioux City, IA  51104.  The family requests memorials be given to Siouxland Hospice.
